The Big Mistake Most Trauma Therapists Make with Sensitive Women

You have done the work. You sat on the therapy couch and talked through your childhood. Probably even processed your triggers and practiced your deep breathing. Yet, you still feel like you are vibrating at a different frequency than everyone else.

Many trauma therapists are great at healing old wounds. They look for the “why” behind your reactions. However, there is one big mistake they often make with sensitive women. They look for trauma where they should be looking at neurodiversity.

I am here with the elder-sister-energy and I’m a therapist with over 17 years of experience in mental health. I’m here to remind you: your brain is uniquely beautiful. I’m speaking directly to the high-achieving millennial women who feel ‘too much’ in a world that wasn’t built for them. You will learn why the “cure” mentality is actually a form of ableism. We will also explore how to move from fixing yourself to finally knowing your goodness.

When Trauma Therapists Miss the Wiring

Trauma therapists often view the world through the lens of what happened to you. This perspective is helpful for processing past pain. However, it’s a problem when they ignore how your brain is naturally wired.

For example, a provider might see your sensory overload and call it hypervigilance or being triggered. They might see your need for routine and call it a control issue from childhood. They often call autistic burnout depression or PTSD. When trauma therapists only see trauma, they miss the person standing in front of them. This leads to years of emotional labor that never quite hits the mark.

The Ableism of the Fix-It Mindset

Ableism is the belief that certain minds are better than others. In the clinical world, this shows up as a “cure” mentality. Many providers believe that if you just heal enough, you will eventually act “normal.”

This is a heavy burden for neurodivergent women. You cannot process away your neurotype. You cannot heal your way out of being Autistic. Instead of working to fix your sensitivity, we should be honoring it. When we mislabel Autism as a symptom, we tell you that your core identity is a problem to be solved.
