When EMDR Didn’t Work: You Deserve Better

EMDR session didn't work here's why

By Vanessa Palomera, MA, LMFT

There’s a lot of hype around EMDR therapy these days, and for good reason. When it’s done right, it can create fast, deep healing that changes lives.

But what most people aren’t talking about is what happens when EMDR is done wrong.

And sadly, I know this firsthand.

Before I became trained and certified in EMDR myself, I went to a therapist who said she did EMDR. She had it listed on her website. She pulled out the light bar and had the buzzers. So I thought, “Okay, this must be the real thing.”

But what I experienced in that room left me confused, emotionally raw, and feeling broken.
There was no clear preparation, no target memory, no regulation strategies. Just a vague attempt at “processing” that felt chaotic and unsafe.

I left those sessions blaming myself. I thought maybe I just wasn’t “doing EMDR right.”
But the truth?
It wasn’t me.
It was the lack of safety, structure, and proper training.

And sadly… I’ve learned I’m not the only one.

You’re Not Alone if EMDR Didn’t Work for You

Since then, countless clients have shared stories with me about how previous EMDR therapists hurt or retraumatized them by rushing the process or skipping crucial steps.

  • Clients who were pushed into reprocessing trauma before their nervous system was ready.
  • Clients who weren’t taught grounding tools or how to tell when they were dissociating.
  • Clients who felt flooded and alone during sessions that were supposed to heal.

If this has been your experience too and EMDR didn’t work, please hear this:

You didn’t fail EMDR.
You weren’t too broken.
You just didn’t receive EMDR in a safe and attuned way.

EMDR Is a Powerful Tool, But Only When Used Properly

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a beautiful, evidence-based trauma therapy. It follows a structured 8-phase model designed to gently help the brain process stuck memories and unhook from past pain.

When it’s done well, it can feel like magic.
But it’s not just about eye movements or buzzers.

It’s about the relationship, the preparation, and the attunement.

Here’s what effective EMDR should include:

  • A clear plan and target memory
  • Emotional safety and co-regulation
  • Grounding and coping tools before any processing
  • Consent and collaboration every step of the way
  • A therapist who knows how to slow down if your system needs it

How to Find a Safe, Trauma-Informed EMDR Therapist

When you’re searching for a therapist, especially for trauma work, here’s what I want you to look for:

  • Experience using EMDR with real clients
  • Willingness to explain how they’ll prevent retraumatization
  • Openness to walk you through their EMDR process before diving in
  • EMDR Certification, active supervision with an EMDRIA-approved consultant, or active supervision with an EMDR certified supervisor.
  • EMDR training from and EMDRIA-approved trainer or Laurel Parnell’s Attachment Focused EMDR.

If a therapist gets defensive or vague when you ask those questions… that’s a red flag, not your cue to stay quiet. Your healing is too sacred for guesswork.
